My name is Teh Tian Yan (TAY Tea-AN YEN)
Friends call me Tian Yan, sometimes Tian, others TY. But if you must insist on me adopting a Western name to fit in, then you can call me Snoopy. (grins)
I’m born on the same day as David Ogilvy, who shares the exact birth day of his father and grandfather (23rd of June). I know this because he wrote it in the first sentence, of the first paragraph, of the first chapter in his autobiography. All hopes of being the reincarnation of the advertising legend was destroyed when I found out he passed at 1999.
I’m based in Malaysia. It’s the country nearest to Singapore, and no, we don’t live on trees.
I have gotten into online direct response marketing since 2005. And now, concentrating on direct response copywriting.
My philosophy: “Be a jack of all trades, master of ONE”.
A jack of all trades wants to be everything, and therefore becomes nothing. We all been there before.
A master of ONE (or a genius), although brilliant, tend to be dysfunctional and have short life spans. No use being a billionaire, but a lousy human being. No use gaining wealth, but ending your life in your own hands due to depression. No use gaining the knowledge of the universe, when you can’t cut your food and feed yourself.
“Jack of all trades, master of ONE” is someone who is down to earth, practical, and does the ordinary things, extraordinarily well.
